Maqui Berry Anthocyanins Approved as a New Food Ingredient photo01内页(500X305)On February 10, 2025, maqui berry anthocyanins were approved as a new food raw material by the National Health Commission of China, permitted for use in general food products. Derived from the fruits of Aristotelia chilensis, a plant of the Elaeocarpaceae family, maqui berry anthocyanins are produced through a series of processes including water extraction, filtration, purification, concentration, and drying. In China, its approved applications include dairy and dairy products, beverages, jellies, cocoa products, chocolate and chocolate-based products, candies, frozen desserts, baked goods, and alcoholic beverages.
Our German company, Anklam Extrakt GmbH, is the global exclusive producer of maqui berry anthocyanins. This maqui berry extract is standardized to contain a minimum of 35% total anthocyanins and 25% delphinidins. The maqui berry, its raw material, is an exceptional fruit that grows in the wild forests of Patagonia situated in South America. It is an exceptional microclimatic area with extreme conditions for plants to grow in. Due to high levels of solar radiation and large temperature variations between day and night, these plants generate a unique phytochemical profile resulting in 30 – 40 % more health bearing molecules compared to similar plants cultivated in other parts of the world. Nowadays, maqui berries are acknowledged as real “super fruit” due to their superior antioxidant attributes.
Currently, this extract is offered under two proprietary branded ingredients: MaquiBright® and Delphinol®. MaquiBright® is specifically developed to support eye health, while Delphinol® is primarily positioned for beauty from within, metabolic balance, and bone health. In the future, Huisong Pharmaceuticals will work closely with Anklam Extrakt GmbH to further cultivate the maqui berry sector and drive the expanded applications of maqui berry anthocyanins in the food industry.
